recent fun

I was ringing up a lady at the Mountain High counter and the phone rang. Hello, I said.
"Shouldn't you be working harder!?" the other voice said.
"What?" Which dork is this, I thought.
"Shouldn't you be working harder!?" the other voice said again. I knew who it was.
"Hooks!!"
"Hey buttface." Yeah, it was definitely Alex Hooks. Our old manager who we love to pieces even though he ditched us for a road trip.

I asked him what he was doing.

"Well that sounds fun. You've just been climbing a lot....You're in where?.......What are you doing in Utah!?....You're in a sand storm!?"
By now the lady trying to buy a spork is looking at me like I'm a fruitcake. I told her sorry but she would have to wait because my old manager needed help with his sand storm.
"Alex, hey, yeah, I'm with a customer so I can't check the weather right now but....three days?! Hah! Dude...Yeah hang in there buddy, I'll get somebody."

So Alex was caught in a sandstorm. In Utah. But I think he's out now and we're happy for him. But we still miss him, especially when Pandora plays Nappy Dreads.

Surprise attack on his last day, doh!

In other news, the mail brought me a new picture of the missionary I support in India. It's been four years since his last one, and he looks the same, except for the beard and a little Indian lady standing next to him all smiley. I'm not surprised he got married because he's very hansom. Anyway, congratulations to Sachin and Ashawini!

nirupoma

I just got a letter from "my" little chicana in India. I'm able to correspond with her through Gospel for Asia's Bridge of Hope program, and it's just been the neatest thing.

Anyway, a letter from Nirupoma was definitely special enough to share with everybody else. I remember over two years ago when I was still an intern with GFA, we had sponsorship cards for kids at a local seminary. I saw her face and it literally felt like my heart melted out of my chest (aw, I know).

Say a prayer for her.

how to wear saree

PS - that amazing white shirt I'm wearing in the previous post? Mendoza bought it for me in India. Homegirl's got style.

So while I was going through my Indian clothes and the punjabis, I found two sarees with a top and the petticoate. Well, you can't just stumble across a saree without trying to put it on. Last I remember, getting that saree on in Thiruvalla was more complicated than brain surgery. I tried to do it by myself and it was a wretched disaster.

Found this gem to help me out:

    indian b'day dinner

I have good friends in Birmingham who take care of me. Katie and the Three Slattons took me out to Indian food.

Me and my dorky little brother, Seth.

We actually met four years ago on a Mexico missions trip, and I've since felt the wrath. Seth actually just got back from teaching English in Azurbaijan and is looking into becoming a part of YWAM, which sounds a lot more exciting than eatin dirt at construction sites.

Katie made me this cake. Off the hook.

Got pwnd by my big bro, Stephen.

Stephen just got back from Egypt and Turkey, which is exciting because he's had a heart for Muslims since I've known him. He's since been my cohort in Eastern Asia missions, and a huge blessing. Their sister Sarah just finished 24/7 at Church of the Highlands and is pursuing a career in cosmotology. I remember sharing a tent with her at a retreat many moons ago and laughing my butt off all night, that grl be funny.

Seth gave me a piece of gum and a card.

The inevitable souvenir from good Indian food = a raging case of curry fingers.

Katie and I went to Barnes & Noble for a spell to read. It's been really cool watching her to grow in knowledge about her faith. Although she's going to UAB, her heart is really to go to Bible college to learn more about what she believes. But the things you can't learn in school, like love and wisdom, she already has!

Anyway, I had such a fun night. Those four really know how to make ol' "slanty eyes" feel special. By keeping these guys in your prayers, you'll be liftin up some world changers.

    amy carmichael

I'm reading a biography on Amy Carmichael and totally soaking it up.

    India

    A wildbird child,
But lately caught, and nowise tame
    And all unreconciled
To cages and to careful bars
That seemed to ban the very stars.
